Local-first Markdown notes

Write here.
Pick it up anywhere.

Notes 2 keeps a complete copy of your notebook on every device. Write offline on one, keep going on another, and every edit merges when they reconnect.

Try it. Take a device offline.

Both notes below run the same merge engine as the app. Switch one offline, edit both, then bring it back.

Laptop
Sync serverRust · Yrs · Postgres
Phone

Both devices are online. Type in either one.

What you get

A notebook that doesn’t need the internet, but loves it.

Offline is the default

Every notebook lives on your device in full, images included. Lose the connection mid-sentence and nothing changes, even across restarts.

Live, not polled

Edits stream over a live connection as you type. There is no sync button, and nothing to refresh.

Both edits land

Two devices changed the same note offline? Notes 2 merges them character by character. No “conflicted copy” files to reconcile.

Write with your team

Shared notebooks with owner, admin, editor and viewer roles. See who is in a note and where their cursor is.

Sketch inside a note

Draw with Excalidraw without leaving the page. Shapes stay editable, and separate edits to a drawing merge too.

Your notes stay yours

Plain Markdown underneath. Export a complete backup of notes, images and editable drawings whenever you like.

How sync works

From your keyboard to every screen.

  1. You type

The change is written to the copy on your device first, so the editor never waits for the network.

  2. It streams

A compact binary update travels over a secure WebSocket. The server commits it to its Postgres log before confirming.

  3. Everyone converges

Other devices merge it into their own copy. A device returning from offline compares state vectors, so only the missing edits travel.

Where it runs

One notebook, on the screens you use.

Android

A native app around the same editor, with the system file picker and document export.

Linux desktop

A native, GPU-rendered client with its own private replica of your notebook.

Questions

The honest answers.

Do I need an account?

No. Choose Try on this device for a private, local-only notebook. Sign in when you want to sync between devices or share a notebook with your team.

What happens when I’m offline?

Everything keeps working. Notes and images are stored on the device. When the connection returns, your device and the server compare what each has seen and exchange only the changes the other is missing.

What if two people edit the same sentence?

Both edits are kept, and every device ends up with identical text. The merge guarantees the copies agree; it can’t judge whether two simultaneous rewrites read well, so you may want to tidy up afterwards.

Is it end-to-end encrypted?

No. Connections are encrypted in transit and every notebook requires its own credentials or team membership, but the sync server can read notes and images. Keep that in mind for sensitive material.

Can I take my notes with me?

Yes. Export a complete backup at any time, with notes, images and editable drawings. Drawings also export as standard .excalidraw files.

Is Notes 2 ready for everything I write?

Notes 2 is an early, independent experiment in local-first software. Password reset and email verification aren’t available yet, so keep your own backup of anything important.
